In early 2017 Jaka purchased a donor bike for the project and devoted the next 5 months to reimagining it. The bike he sourced was a neglected and rather sorry looking Kawasaki KZ550. The early 80s KZ was Kawasaki's scaled-down Z1R that featured a frame design influenced by Norton's legendary featherbed and a strong DOHC inline 4 that produced a respectable 58bhp.

4 weeks ago I had this KZ440 given to me. I've been wanting to do a cafe racer build for some time, so I dove in and "finished" it in 4 weeks. This is my first project - learned a lot and still have some issues/ questions so I thought I would post here. I'll start with a before and after photo, then post pics of the process.

Hmm it is a bit long. A true cafe racer style is hard on an LTD. Better suited for a brat style unless you're willing to do more cutting and welding.. And the Honda 450 "Superhawk" puts out only a bit more than half the power of your Kawasaki (yet the Honda costs double on Craigslist).

Kawasaki LTD 440 built plans. I had an exact vision of how I imagined the end result. Shorter frame, color scheme black-brown, and kind of a mix of classic and modern. (And a lot of matt-black:D) In the end, everything went a bit more complicated than expected, but no problem because I was only a FaceTime call away from a good and helpful tip.

Unless you have something that's commonly cafe'd like a honda CB500/550 you'll have to make you're own - or just not have them, I don't. Handlebars are the easy part. The real old school way to do it is to flip your stock bar over and see if it will work, it may, it may not. after that you have the options of clips ons, drag bars, or clubman bars. your choice.
